Creating a Profession for PLM Practitioners

The Home of Professional PLM

The PLM industry needs a recognised, worldwide profession for the people who work within it.  The Professional PLM Initiative has been set up to fulfil this need. Check .com

The Initiative covers the whole spectrum of what it means to be 'professional' in PLM.  Bringing this together is a significant step forward, and will change the way that PLM practitioners work.

The Initiative is inclusive and interactive.  This web site shows the latest developments, and how you can get involved.

  PLM as a Profession

The Professional PLM Initiative aims to establish a professional structure within the PLM industry that will support its practitioners, and the discipline of PLM itself, in line with evolving methods and technologies.

PLM practitioners will continue to be undervalued until the work that they do is made clear to the rest of the business world. Forming a single, global PLM Profession is the way to make this happen.

  Mission

The Mission of the Initiative is to raise PLM onto the same level as existing professions, by bringing together PLM practitioners from around the world to form a single, global Professional Body that will support and maintain the discipline into the long-term future.

  Impact on PLM

The drive to form a specific profession for PLM will not only raise profile and awareness amongst other disciplines, but will have the effect of expanding and integrating the worldwide PLM industry.

As the Initiative reaches through the world's manufacturing countries it will spread good practice and cross-fertilise ideas.  This effect can be leveraged by the Steering Group to actively influence and enhance the direction, growth and adoption of PLM.

  Deliverables

The Professional PLM Initiative will produce all of the documents, specifications and tools that are necessary to define the scope and activity of Professional PLM.

This will be a huge area of rediscovery for PLM practitioners - to see in writing the full set of skills and expertise that they should possess.

Professional PLM - a Simple Overview

There is an annotated PowerPoint presentation that gives an easy-to-understand explanation of the Initiative, its aims and potential impact.

It is based on a presentation at the Technia Innovation Forum Virtual Experience entitled:-

"Professional PLM - raise your standards and your horizons"

  Get Involved

The principles of PLM are the same the world over, and PLM practitioners need to be able to work effectively wherever their organisation operates. This means we may need one global profession.

This will happen because leading organisations from all parts of the industry come together in pursuit of excellence. If you want to influence the long-term future of PLM, add your input now.

Themes

The Steering Group has identified 3 themes that should have the most initial impact.

Progress will be focused on these areas as part of a comprehensive overall plan.

Neutral PLM Syllabus

The Working Group has produced an initial draft Neutral PLM Syllabus.

Add your feedback about its scope and content.

Global Education Map

Liaising with PLM training and education institutions around the world will develop a map of training provision and opportunities for learning.

Body of Knowledge

Capturing the skills and methods that are used by PLM practitioners in many different countries will generate an international definition of the PLM Body of Knowledge.
